The current palace was constructed from 1309 to 1424, and replaced some earlier fortified buildings.  Throughout the years, the building has hosted political institutions from the Republic of Venice to the Napoleonic occupation of the city. Today it is preserved as a museum, housing many masterpieces by different artists, including wonderful paintings by Tintoretto and Veronese.
